We’ve decide that Jojoba Oil just doesn’t get all the credit that it deserves. With all the fancy synthetic moisturizers out there there is little room for a natural oil that does a better job!

This exceptional “oil” (it’s really a wax) has been used by native cultures for hundreds of years for it’s moisturizing qualities and exceptional similarity to sebum, the oils that are naturally produced by our skin to keep it soft and supple. Because it is so similar to our skin’s own oils, it not only makes for an amazing moisturizer but an excellent treatment for wrinkles, stretch marks, or any dry, damaged or aged skin.

Even though it’s benefits have been well known in the deserts of the American South West, it was more or less ignored by the rest of the world until the banning of the importation of whale oil in the early 70′s. As necessity is often the mother of invention, Jojoba oil proved to be an equal if not superior replacement for the whale oil that was used in cosmetics and other products.  It’s of little wonder why whales love jojoba oil almost as much as we do.

Jojoba oil is extracted from the beans/fruit of a humble little desert shrub, native to the Sonoran desert that we at G.B.’s call home.  Even though the original formula’s for G.B.’s salve, soap and balms didn’t include jojoba oil, we knew that by adding it, it would make these great formulas even better.

Lo and behold we were right! Not only is jojoba a superior moisturizer, its anti-oxidative and anti-fungal qualities make it a great addition to any skin treatment. Its hypo-allergenic properties make it safe for just about anyone and the fact that it replicates our own natural oils so well, means that it is perfect for those with even the most sensitive skin.

We met a woman at the Farmer’s market a few weeks back with terrible skin sensitivities. She really couldn’t use any moisturizing product even those labeled for use on sensitive skin. We recommended that she try applying jojoba oil by itself and she was so impressed with the results that she returned this past week to thank us for the good advice.

If you use our products you’ll be happy to know that our Calendula Super Salve, lip balms, and Old Fashioned Liquid Soaps all contain  jojoba oil. Don’t tell anyone but we’re pretty sure it’s the reason everybody prefers our lip balms to the ones they used before. “They just go on smoother and moisturize better!”

So if you’re unfamiliar with this humble oil from the South West we encourage you to give it a try. If you already use our products, now you can have some cool stuff to tell your friends. If you haven’t, give them a try and you’ll understand what all our excitement is about. After all, all those whales can’t possibly be wrong.
